Victim of UPI / online fraud? Do this in the first hour
If money is debited by fraud, the first 60 minutes matter most. Call 1930 and file on the cybercrime portal to freeze the funds before they're withdrawn.
Steps
- 1
Call 1930 immediately
The National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) can flag the transaction and request the receiving bank to freeze the amount. Speed is everything.
- 2
Report on cybercrime.gov.in
File a complaint under 'Financial Fraud' with all transaction details. You get an acknowledgement number to track.
- 3
Inform your bank / UPI app
Call the bank's official number (on the card/passbook), report the fraud, and ask them to block the card/UPI and raise a chargeback.
- 4
Do NOT share more details
Never share OTP, PIN, or install any 'support' app the fraudster suggests. Banks never ask for OTP.
- 5
File a police complaint
Visit the nearest police station or the cyber crime police station (CEN). Carry printouts of the portal complaint and bank report.
- 6
Follow up
Track the complaint on the portal; provide the bank any forms needed for the reversal.
💡 Good to know
- Report unauthorised transactions to your bank within 3 days to limit your liability to zero (RBI rules).
- 1930 + cybercrime.gov.in is the official route — beware fake 'helpline numbers' found on Google.
